“125 Year of the Australian Navy in the National Maritime Heritage Collection”
This talk by Stirling Smith will focus on the Navy heritage collection of historical artefacts, relics and curiosities from the over 160,000 objects held in the National Maritime Collection.
These include:
Objects and art works
Historical maps
Historic vessels like the MV Krait
Object from the HMAS Sydney (I) and German SMS Emden
Captain James Cook voyages.
The Dunbar shipwreck and much more.
Among his many duties Stirling is also responsible for managing and interpretation of the Museums naval vessels HMAS Vampire, HMAS Onslow, HMAS Advance and the MV Krait.

Stirling Smith
Stirling Smith is an archaeologist, curator and heritage specialist with over thirty years’ experience working in Australia and overseas. He specialises in maritime archaeology, military and polar heritage and his is the current Curator of Navy at the Australian National Maritime Museum.
Stirling is the former President and current Senior Vice President of the Australasian Institute for Maritime Archaeology (AIMA) and former member of the International Council on Monuments and Sites International Polar Heritage Committee.
He is the founder of the Operation Digger project. Operation Digger is a community-based volunteer project that is designed to assist veterans’ physical and mental wellbeing by involving them in recording archaeological and heritage sites throughout NSW.
Stirling has also work closely with veteran groups on recording military heritage sites & founded Operation Digger, a community-based volunteer project that is designed to assist veterans’ physical & mental wellbeing by involving them in recording archaeological & heritage sites throughout Australia.
