F1 champions generosity

David Berthon, Chairman, RACA Motoring Committee

The need for more housing may be a hot topic in Australia at present however in a move that shone light on the homeless in Europe this week Formula 1 Champion Max Verstappen came up with a stunning act of generosity. Verstappen announcing he would donate his entire $12.9 million dollar bonus and sponsorship earnings to fund a homeless shelter initiative for hundreds in need.

In an emotional press conference, the Dutch F1 ace left those present rather moved by his deeply personal motivation behind the decision. “I’ve seen the effects of homelessness first hand growing up. And I knew if ever I had the means, I’d give back in a meaningful way. No one deserves to sleep on a sidewalk.”

The move is in stark contrast to the 27-year old’s fierce competitiveness on the racetrack and has earned him significant global admiration for his compassion for the homeless. The Verstappen Housing Project is a groundbreaking initiative set to build 150 permanent housing units and create 300 emergency shelter beds across high-risk urban areas throughout Europe, starting in the Netherlands.

Verstappen has made it clear that he is not seeking headlines or applause, telling the press “People without homes are statistics – they’re fathers, daughters, veterans, and neighbors. If I can use my platform t make even a fraction of a difference, I’ll do it very time. My parents taught me that success means nothing if you don’t lift others with you. I’m Proud of my titles, but this? This might be the most important thing I’ve ever done.”

Construction starts on the first shelter in Rotterdam next month – the project, partnered with nonprofit organisations and local governments will not only provide safe places to sleep but include mental health resources, job assistance programs and 24/7 support staff to help individuals to rebuild their lives from the ground up.
