The RACA Arts and Culture Community Group is back, and we are pleased to present Sydney Tenor John L’Estrange in a Recital Program of 19th and early 20th century European Art Song, featuring compositions by Tosti, Saint-Saens and Wolf, as well as English masterpieces by Vaughan-Williams, Quilter, Elwyn-Edwards and the stunning Heggie arrangement of Danny Boy. The ‘Art Song’ is a 19th century musical form that became popular in the salons and recital halls of private estates. In today’s world of large concert halls, the Royal Automobile Club is delighted to be able to provide the setting for an experience of these profound musical works so they may be enjoyed in the way they were designed to be heard, in beautiful intimate spaces. Be taken away on the wings of song, to the salons and drawing rooms of old Europe and the British Isles.
Come and join us as we explore the salon Art Song in this first of a series of RACA Recitals and Talks featuring the Humanities, hosted by the RACA Arts and Culture Community Group.
John L’Estrange is a graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium, and we are delighted that he has chosen the Royal Automobile Club of Australia for this Recital.
Jamie-Lee Xu recently completed her Master of Music Studies (Performance) degree at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, after completing her Bachelor of Music (Performance). She was awarded the Keith and Eileen Ong Prize for Piano on entry to her Master’s degree.
Additionally, she has received the John and Dorothy Vimpani Pianoforte Fund scholarship on entry to the Conservatorium in 2018, as well as the Molly Neale Memorial Award in 2021 and 2022. In 2023, Jamie-Lee was awarded the George and Margaret Henderson Scholarship, allowing her to attend a summer school program at the Collaborative Piano Institute in the US.
Jamie-Lee has had successes in 2022, winning both the David Miller Award and the Sydney International Song Prize. She has studied with Dr Jeanell Carrigan AM during her post-graduate studies, specialising in a collaborative piano major. Formerly, she has studied with David Miller AM, Natalia Ricci and has had masterclass experience with Graham Johnson OBE, Christian Müller, Warren Jones and Rita Sloan.
