The Urban Escapees is a hard-backed picture book for young children up to and including seven (7) years of age. It comes highly endorsed and is described as “Entertaining and educational, thoughtful and fun.” It tells an enchanting story of the relationship between a wildlife-loving boy, Louis, and a Brushtail possum family who live in his family’s large, leafy garden and whose lives and habitat are threatened by urban creep. What will happen to them? Where will they go? Can Louis save them before it’s too late and their homes and environment are destroyed?
In this book Susan demonstrates how some of our natural living environments: our trees, large gardens, bushland, native flora and fauna are being destroyed by the increasing urbanisation of our cities and towns. The book shows how this loss of biodiversity not only changes the environment for humans themselves, but also endangers the wildlife and bird life as these creatures’ homes, habitats and food supply are drastically diminished or destroyed. Australia is one of the most urbanised nations, with 90 per cent of the population living in just 0.22 per cent of the country’s land area and 85 per cent living within 50 kilometres of the coast.
