The Ladies Committee is pleased to welcome guest speaker Dr. Matthew Stephens, a Research Librarian at the Caroline Simpson Library & Research Collection.

Matthew is currently working on a fascinating and unique exhibition titled ‘Songs of Home and Distant Isles’ (working title). The exhibition focuses on the domestic musical environment of Australia in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.  With music predominantly brought to Australia in the minds and luggage of early British settlers, established European music-making practices were adapted and transformed in the creation of a uniquely Australian domestic soundscape.  The exhibition explores the Anglo-Australian relationship through aspects of musical life and interactions between Indigenous and European music during the early period of Australian settlement until 1860.  It also focuses on how people constructed a sense of ‘home’ and ‘place’ through music, and reflects on what that means in a contemporary context.
