HMAS AE1 and AE2 were Australia’s first submarines. At the outbreak of WWI they were assigned to German New Guinea with the Australian Naval & Military Expeditionary Force to capture German wireless facilities.
On 14 September, AE1, left Rabaul to patrol Cape Gazelle and vanished. 103 years after the 35 crew were lost, AE1 was located off the Duke of York Islands, 300 metres below the surface.
The Australasian Pioneers’ Club, in conjuction with the Royal Automobile Club of Australia, invite you our ANZAC Day Luncheon. The presenter for this special event will be Irini Malliaros, MSc. Ms Malliaros is maritime archaeologist at the Silentworld Foundation and has worked on several sites ranging from 16th century to WW2, including the Lord Sandwich ex HMB Endeavour.
