Corks 'n' Forks - August

Dear Members,

I begin this month’s article with details of our very successful Bastille Dinner on 14 July. It had everything – a wonderful five course French themed menu, excellent matching French wines, and some live French themed music from Club member Nadia Piave and her accordionist and guitarist – all of which was much enjoyed by the 50 members and guests attending. There was even some dancing!

Ian Cook from Five Way Cellars supplied the wines and discussed his selections as the Dinner progressed. Of particular interest at our table was the entrée of quail and vegetable terrine matched with a 2020 Petit Chablis (Chardonnay) and a 2020 Saumur Blanc (Chenin Blanc). The crepe suzette for dessert and matching sauternes wasn’t half bad either!

Chef Dominique Descat came down toward the end of the Dinner and spoke passionately about the significance of Bastille Day in his native France and the menu he crafted. He also proudly answered the many questions asked of him.

Also worthy of mention was the excellent service from the Staff led by Michael Lopez, the Club’s newly appointed Food and Beverage Manager.

Tasting/Tour – 18 August – ‘A Bevy of Blends’

Our next event will be a tasting/tour on 18 August titled ‘A Bevy of Blends’, when we’ll be comparing red and white wines produced from a blend of one or more different grape varieties, and comparing them with wines made with the same grape variety but from either a single vineyard or two or more vineyards.

The intent of blending is to ensure the finished wine will be better than the sum of its parts. The intent of our tasting/tour will be for Corks ‘n’ Forkers to test that theory over a range of 12 or so carefully chosen red and white wines.

For those who’ve not been before, our tasting/tours are relaxed, informal and educative evenings designed to appeal to those members and their guests seeking an introduction to the wonderful world of wine or to expand their existing knowledge. The wines are served in several flights, accompanied by small but ample food courses chosen by Chef to match the wines.

Our tasting tours are always popular, so I suggest you book early. The all-inclusive price is $120 per head. Bookings can be made on line, with the RACA app, or by contacting Gayu Mudaliar at the Club on 8273 2322 or

I look forward to ‘blending’ with you on 18 August.
