The Canterbury Club was established in 1872 by a group of twenty prominent Christchurch
businessmen to provide a haven in the city for men mostly of mercantile character. The Canterbury
Club provided a venue where gentlemen could meet, discuss business affairs and socialise. Today the
club takes pride in providing its members the finest services and facilities and maintains a welcoming
feeling of relaxed privacy for the men and women from the civic, professional and business circles
who make up the current membership.
Located in the heart of Christchurch overlooking the Avon River the Canterbury Club is an important
heritage landmark to the city and is only 20 minutes from the airport.
The Canterbury Club facilities include a Bar and Café, Health Club, Billiard Room, six private dining
rooms and six well-appointed bedrooms comprising of two suites and four heritage bedrooms. All
bedrooms are equipped with ensuite bathrooms, digital television, wireless internet and air
conditioning in quiet heritage surrounds. A fully stocked pantry is available to house guests at all
times. The Members’ Café and Bar is open for lunch and dinner dining Monday-Friday. Whilst staying
at the Canterbury Club guests have full access to the Worcester Health Club and on-site parking.
There are many attractions within close walking distance including The Museum, Art Gallery,
Christchurch’s Botanic Gardens and Ballantynes, New Zealand’s very first department store. In the
winter can members enjoy skiing in the Southern Alps (1.5hr drive) or in the summer Canterbury has a
large number of award winning wineries that are well worth a visit.
The Club is open Monday to Friday or by arrangement and offers a sanctuary for its members, their
guests and visitors from our worldwide reciprocal clubs
